The Nightcap: Kapitolyo Edition

By Debbie Then / Leave a Comment

My friends and I are junior jocks for a radio station in a building along Boni EDSA. Being a 24 hour workplace it is- our training hours would usually run late, or even sometimes end at dinner time. Seeing as the closest food place of varied choice would be the 7/11 in our building- we had to venture out deeper into the heart of our turf if we wanted to be heartily fed. Sure, there are a bevy of good establishments around the area, but me and friends zeroed in on one area in particular.

We’ve all heard about the commendable gustatory suggestions from friends and family regarding the hidden gem that is the ‘Kapitolyo food scene’. With that mystical beckon in mind, we decided to take our spare time and empty bellies on a food adventure. Thus began our little rendezvous, and the search for the best nightcap in town.

The selection process we made was based off of very simple criteria:
a. Cheap beer
b. Good food to go with said beer and;
c. How much we talking here?

With that in mind, here are my 5 picks (in no particular order).

  1. RUB Ribs & BBQ

I’m taking you to where it all began. Aside from bringing people together, RUB brought us new American grub in the form of ribs, wings, rings and all those #yummygoodthings- as they call it. Recommendations would absolutely have to be their rather affordable- yet so worth the price- Raki BBQ Ribs served in Singles, Super Duo and Family Brunch (1, 2, and 4 people respectively). With their sides up for customization and their gently rubbed rustic ribs- this place deserves the hype!
Price range: Approx. ₱700 for two people.

  1. Silantro Fil-Mex Cantina

A popular choice based off word-of-mouth and experience, Silantro has some of the best soft tacos, quesadillas and nachos on the strip. Personal favorites would include a Medio (double choice of meat) Lucha soft taco in lamb and beef- served with 3 sauces and; although a little pricey, the Macho Lucha Steak (able to serve 2 people). Just a head’s up though, the line might be long at certain hours but it’s definitely worth the wait!
Price range: Approx. ₱400 for two people.

  1. Patrick’s Pub

Known as ‘your friendly neighborhood pub’, St. Patrick’s takes you into the heart of Irish pub-life, comfy dining and foreign draft beers. With their extensive menu of Irish/American eats, you’ll be having a hard time deciding what sounds more delicious! Notable mentions would have to go to their St. Paddy’s Original Sweet and Spicy wings, scrumptious Bacon Steak, and even the simplest of all pleasures, their homemade bowl of chili. And of course to wash that all down, a pint of caramel beer bigger than your girlfriend’s faces’ wouldn’t hurt.

  1. Uncle Moe’s Shawarma Hub

I don’t care what anyone says- when I think of the best 24-hour Shawarma place in the area- Uncle Moe’s does it for me. When it comes to having me and my friends as a regular customer, consistency is a must and I find it here every time. For starters, the meat always tastes juicy and tender, while their yoghurt garlic sauce always hits the right spot. The Moussaka Melt (eggplant kebab lasagna) is divine and their Kofta Balls are a mouth-watering treat! Extremely affordable and consistently delicious, it’s safe to say that Uncle Moe is my favorite relative!
Price range: Approx. ₱600 for two people (including alcohol) /Approx. ₱49 for a pint of beer.

  1. Locavore Kitchen & Drinks

A relatively new entry into the Kapitolyo food scene, Locavore has garnered so much attention since it’s opening late last year. Taking cue from its name, ‘Locavore’ stands for people who eat meals made from locally-obtained ingredients- making it a point to serve quality authentic Filipino dishes. People have been raving about their traditional Filipino cuisine with a twist! Recommendations include their seafood collection: Red Crab cooked in Pampanga crab fat and chili garlic oil served with red egg, onions and tomatoes; Jumbo black tiger prawns, crab fat, garlic, butter, and Japanese mayonnaise and; the unique Lechon oyster sisig. And an honorable mention goes out to their chori burger as well. If you’re looking for a filling and locally influenced meal, then Locavore is the place for a taste of our Filipino heritage.
